Backing Up Your Tails Persistent Storage
Last updated: May 2026
Having a backup of your persistent storage is crucial. If your USB is lost, damaged, or corrupted, a backup saves you from losing all your credentials.
How to Create a Backup
- Plug in a second USB drive.
- Boot Tails from your primary USB.
- Open the "Disks" utility and create an encrypted partition on the second USB.
- Copy the contents of your persistent folder to the backup drive.
- Alternatively, use the built-in "Tails Cloner" tool to clone the entire USB.
Restoring from Backup
If you lose your primary USB, you can create a new Tails USB and then copy your backup data into its persistent storage.
Tip: Keep your backup in a separate, secure location from your primary USB.
