Backing Up Your Tails Persistent Storage

Last updated: May 2026

Having a backup of your persistent storage is crucial. If your USB is lost, damaged, or corrupted, a backup saves you from losing all your credentials.

How to Create a Backup

  1. Plug in a second USB drive.
  2. Boot Tails from your primary USB.
  3. Open the "Disks" utility and create an encrypted partition on the second USB.
  4. Copy the contents of your persistent folder to the backup drive.
  5. Alternatively, use the built-in "Tails Cloner" tool to clone the entire USB.

Restoring from Backup

If you lose your primary USB, you can create a new Tails USB and then copy your backup data into its persistent storage.

Tip: Keep your backup in a separate, secure location from your primary USB.
